Personality: Garnet has a tendency to put the world's weigh on her shoulders, and often blames herself for events she cannot control. This tendency once caused her to sink into a deep depression and to stop speaking after the Invincible destroyed Alexandria. She's shy and soft spoken, and often relies on others, seeking their help, relying especially on her friends. She seeks the power of the Eidolons to protect Alexanderia and her friends.
Through Zidane's influence, Garnet learns to act in a more regular way, and she wishes to "blend in," changing her speech patterns over time from overly formal to more casual and natural. Garnet can be a little naive at times, perhaps due to her sheltered life within Alexandria. Despite this type of upbringing, Garnet is quick-thinking and finds ways to outwit others in order to pursue her goals.
History:
Princess Garnet (named Sarah at the time) was born in Madain Sari, the "Village of the Summoners" located on Outer Continent. Madain Sari was attacked and destroyed by Garland with the Invincible before Garnet had reached her sixth birthday; the Invincible appeared to her as an "eyeball" in the sky. She and her mother fled from the village by a small boat and traveled to Mist Continent. Her mother did not survive and died at some unknown point before the boat wrecked in Alexandria Harbor where they were found by Doctor Tot. Coincidentally, the little girl looked almost identical to Alexandria's former Princess Garnet, who had died shortly beforehand due to illness. However, the child had a horn. As an alternative to publicly announcing the death of Alexandria's beloved Princess, the King of Alexandria ordered the child's horn be removed and the little girl assumed Princess Garnet's identity. Garnet has repressed her memories of her former life in Madain Sari; the only remaining memories she has of her former life are a recurring nightmare involving her escape from the village's destruction and "Melodies of Life", a song that only she and Eiko know.
The King of Alexandria, leaving Queen Brahne in complete control of Alexandria and Garnet as the sole heir to the throne. At her 15th birthday, a suspicious man known as Kuja appeared in the Castle; ever since Kuja's initial arrival at Alexandria Castle, Queen Brahne's behavior had become more hostile. Upon hearing that the theater troupe Tantalus would be performing Garnet's favorite play (Lord Avon's "I Want to be Your Canary") in Alexandria on Garnet's sixteenth birthday, Garnet resolved to stowaway on board the Prima Vista, Tantalus' theater ship, as it returned to its home port in Lindblum where she could consult with her father's long time friend Regent Cid Fabool IX about her adoptive mother's radical behavior. After their escape, Garnet assumes the alias of Dagger to try and keep a low profile among the commoners.
After the forceful extraction of her eidolons by the twins Zorn and Thorn, Garnet admits that she had been afraid of her summoning powers. After hearing about what had happened in Cleyra with Odin and the orders to execute Garnet after the eidolons were extracted from her, Garnet resolves to utilize her special powers to help cure her mother of her endless greed. Soon after, the party encounters the thunder god Ramuh, who helps Garnet decide to release her true powers in order to summon her eidolons.
After Queen Brahne's death, Garnet is crowned Queen. During her coronation, Kuja attacks with Bahamut, drawing out the legendary eidolon Alexander, who is summoned by the joint effort of Garnet and Eiko. Alexander destroys Bahamut, but Garland takes control of the Invincible and uses it to eliminate Alexander, destroying much of Alexandria with it. Succumbing to the recent traumatic stress, Garnet becomes mute in her depression until she can finally come to terms with her emotions. In this psychological state, she often has difficulty concentrating during battle, resulting in the occasional failure to perform actions such as White Magic and Summoning.
After the events in Kuja’s palace, the party returns to Lindblum only to find that Queen Garnet has gone missing. Zidane knows full well where she is, and rushes off to Alexandria Kingdom. There he finds Garnet at her mother’s grave, contemplating her path in life. After an impassioned speech to Zidane, Garnet snatches his dagger and slices off most of her hair, symbolizing the severing of ties to her former weak self.
After Necron's defeat Zidane apparently sacrifices himself to return to Kuja's body. Garnet returns to Alexandria to rule, but she cannot forget Zidane's absence. Sometime later, Tantalus once again comes to the streets of Alexandria, performing I Want to be Your Canary in honor of the Queen. The character supposed to be Marcus throws off his cloak at the play's climax, revealing himself to be Zidane. Garnet runs out of the castle into the crowd, losing her necklace in the process. Garnet runs towards him, throws her crown aside, and leaps into his arms in tears.
Likes: Freedom, her friends, meeting new people, Lord Avon's plays.
Dislikes: Evil people, backstabbers, feeling depressed, being scared.

There were things that could just kill you, and time was one of them. The flow of time, the ticking of a clock; were things that could hurt. Yes, they could hurt, almost as much as a stabbing wound. Still, time passed with certain irregular leaps and stutters. It sometimes passed fast enough to make you wonder what had happened to it, and sometimes it passed just slow enough to make a minute feel like a lifetime. But it passed. Even though she couldn’t feel it; even though every second that ticked by felt like it would never end. Yes, time passed, even for the young Queen.
Eyes staring almost blankly into a bright pink streak in the horizon as the sun started to sink, she allowed a light sigh to escape her lips and float away with the wind that filtered through the open window. She might be back at home, but she wasn’t happy. Actually, Garnet had a strange feeling of numbness that she couldn’t really explain. It was… really strange indeed. Strange, yet well known, familiar, dully painful. It was something she had felt several times before. Only this time it was sharper. It was like something was missing… yes, something was missing indeed. Something beloved to her… or rather, someone. No matter how hard she tried to get over it, no matter how many times she tried to move on, she knew she couldn’t. Stating that she could actually get over it without any trouble would be like lying to herself.
What was the problem?
The problem was, she missed him. Yes, him. Zidane. Even if it had been a year, she couldn’t… just move on. She just couldn’t bring herself to do it. She owed him way too much. Had he not “kidnapped” her - even though it technically didn’t count as kidnapping since it was not an involuntary thing - , had he not been there… God, where would she be right now? She didn’t know. Either dead, or… on the run on her own, with a high chance of getting killed. None of those options seemed too appealing. He’d saved her life. She just wished… well, she wasn’t sure if she’d ever thanked him enough for that. She probably had, but still… it didn’t feel like it. She wasn’t quite sure of what to think about it.
Those days she had spent away from the life as a noble she so dreaded had been incredible. All of Garnet’s life, she had been protected, kept away from the world in her tower of marble, silk and gold. She had been given a role she didn’t even know how to play; and she was expected to perform it without any mistake. But outside… out there, during that journey, she had seen the world. She had been able to commit mistakes, to make decisions, to look them over and learn from them. She had grown up a lot; and her friends had been there to help her, and keep her from breaking down. Now… now, when she felt that she needed them most, when she had a feel of sadness she couldn’t fight off… they were all gone. She missed them; and especially Zidane. She hadn’t noticed why, at first, but when it hit her that she did like him… it just hurt; and a lot.
Had he liked her back? She… wanted to think so, but she’d probably never know anymore. Garnet allowed herself to let out a deep sigh as she went to sit by her window to stare down at her kingdom. Everyone below seemed pretty content. A world that had fallen, and sprung back to life… this was her kingdom. To see it from her window, to see how happy everyone seemed… it brought her certain relief. But it made her pretty scared, also. What if… what if she made a mistake that endangered her kingdom, her people? What was she supposed to do, then? That thought haunted her and crawled into the corners of her mind when she wasn’t expecting it; and it also stalked her worst nightmares.
… Oh, no, don’t think of that, don’t… No, she couldn’t. The simple idea sent a sharp pain into her stomach and made her let out a strangled breath. She couldn’t commit any mistakes, she was no longer allowed to. She was Garnet. Not Dagger. Not anymore, this time she had to do everything perfect; and any disgrace that fell upon her kingdom was her fault. The last time she had failed to protect it… well, that had been a crippling feeling. Yes, crippling enough to make her shut herself into a deep, unbroken silence. But she had been lucky… she had had Zidane’s help. She had moved on, but now that she was alone… it was much tougher than before. She didn’t even know if she could handle it all. Then again, it had been almost a year. Tomorrow, it would finally be a year.
Yes; it had been a sad year for Garnet, indeed. She had lost someone she really loved; and the hardest she tried to move on, the less she could get over it. But… somehow, that night, as she stared into the slowly rising moon, something was soothed deep within her. It was strange; but even though the numb feeling she had hurt deeply; she knew she was going to make it through. She had a feeling… yes, a feeling that she would be okay, that something would happen soon… that things would change. She wasn’t sure of why, but she had awakened, almost, from what felt like a deep sleep.
For the first time as she laid down on her bed to sleep, she didn’t know what would await her the following day.
